Renewing Series Land Rover Window Channels
One of the problem spost on Series Land Rovers is the window channels.
These tend to becom corroded generally ratty with age. Odlly--even
though they represent a small percentage of the vehicle's size--renewing
these seems to make a huge difference in the overal appearance of the vehicle.
Unfortuantely, this job can be quite a chore. Often these pieces
are mostly rust and have become quite filthy with road grime. Also,
the sins of previous owners are often paid for in this task.
Parts
I bought my parts for about $120.00 from British Pacific.
Rovers North charges about the same. In the Tech Timps section of
the most recent Aluminum Workhorse, it was mentiond that J.C. Whitney
has the same parts. The part number is 188K4848Y. The price
is $13.49 per 8-foot section. This could be significantly cheaper.
Removing the Old Channels
Of course, before installing the new channels, the old ones must be
removed. This is often the largest part of the task Start by
running a screw driver in the channel to find the screws or rivets that
affix it to the window frame or door top. On my Rover, some PO had
used brass screws the last time new window channels were installed.
This was quite unfortunate as the metal around them had corroded to the
point that most of them could not be removed with a screw driver.
I used WD-40 to loosen up several of them, but ended up drilling out two
of them. The door windows can either be removed by removing the locks
from the glass, or if you don't want to do that, remove the track from
the body by drilling out the aluminum rivets that afix the them.
Installing the New Channels
Once the old channels are out, replacement is easy. The only
tip I have is to use aluminum pop rivets instead of screws, as they
are easier to remove.
